Candidate Attorneys

The LRC employs candidate attorneys (CAs) at each of its regional offices. The purpose is to train graduates in the field of public interest litigation and constitutional law.

CAs at the LRC are trained under the Attorneys Act so as to qualify them to be admitted as attorneys. Much of the work is supported by advocates in the Constitutional Litigation Unit and through the materials and assistance available in the LRC’s Bram Fischer Library, including training in research methodology. Workshops dealing with court craft, litigation techniques and how to conduct a case are presented by experienced counsel - either from within the organisation or by those who have had a long association with the LRC.

The LRC has entered into agreements with certain private law firms in terms of which our CAs participate in the training provided to their own CAs in certain areas not covered by the LRC such as company law and legislation dealing with insolvency, insurance, tax, estates and motor vehicle accident claims. In this way, the LRC seeks to ensure our CAs receive exposure to and training in a broad spectrum of the law.
