he Human Rights Commission has criticised government's lack of transparency on its service delivery lists, including the allocation of housing.
Commissioner Janet Love has been speaking at a national information forum in Jo'burg on the controversial Protection of Information Bill. Love says government's attitude towards making essential information available is already a source of tension in some areas. For instance, she says, housing lists which contain the names of people who are in line to benefit from government homes, are not nearly as transparent as they should be. She says this leads to suspicion and anger in communities waiting for service delivery. "They want to understand where they are in this list that is spoken about all over the place but when you ask for a copy of the list, it's one of the most elusive things in the world," said Love.
