| 2008 05 05 'Congratulations to Dr Schoombee on Lawyer of the Year Award' |
The LRC congratulates Dr Johannes Schoombee for receiving the Law Society’s Lawyer of the Year Award on 5 May 2008. Dr Schoombee migrated to Australia from South Africa in 1987. He currently leads the Environmental Defenders Office of West Australia (EDO), a non-profit public-interest environmental law centre, which provides legal services including advice, education, representation and participation in environmental law reform.
From 2006 to 2008, Dr Schoombee volunteered weeks of his personal time to the LRC on three separate occasions, providing expert legal counsel and support for our environmental and land work. About his time with the LRC, Dr. Schoombee said, “It has always been a great privilege to work with the LRC. In fact my own commitment to pro bono work was largely shaped by the history of the LRC and the personalities that drove the organization over the years”. On working with Dr Schoombee, Kobus Pienaar and William Kerfoot, lawyers at the LRC’s Cape Town office wrote, “We are happy to have been on the receiving end of Dr Hannes Schoombee's migratory patterns. For three years in a row since 2006, Hannes has presented himself on 1 February for a month of pro bono work in the LRC’s Cape Town office. The LRC has been enriched by Hannes' breadth of knowledge, intellectual rigour and pragmatism and even by his acquired Aussie accent. We wish to record our profound appreciation that he has volunteered his time so generously and to the benefit of our clients.” |
